New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday asked the Election Commission for week's time to respond to EC's charges that he had tried to incite communal hatred through speeches he had delivered in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
The BJP, which levelleged allegations against Rahul, had filed a complaint with the EC. Rahul had been asked to file his reply by Monday.
The Commission had issued a notice to Congress vice-president over alleged violation of model code of conduct through his speech about Muzaffarnagar riot victims being approached by Pakistan's ISI at Indore in Madhya Pradesh and Churu in Rajasthan earlier this month.
In its notice, EC had cited Rahul's speech at Indore which said riots at Muzaffarnagar were incited by BJP for votes and that ISI was in touch with 10-15 youths whose families were affected by riots.
The notice said, "The Commission has viewed the CDs of both the speeches made by you at lndore and Churu and had detailed deliberations on the same; and the Commission is prima facie of the view that your aforesaid speeches are violating several sections of model code of conduct."
