Modi effect Now Nomura backs BJP after Goldman, CLSA

Modi effect: Now Nomura backs BJP after Goldman, CLSA

In what is seen as another major boost for Guajarat CM Narendra Modi, Japanese brokerage Nomura Holdings has put its weight behind the BJP strongman stating it expected BJP to form the next government

Mumbai: Yet another foreign brokerage has said that it expects Narendra Modi-led BJP to come to power after the Lok Sabha elections.
"Nomura expects a BJP-led coalition to form the next government at the Centre after the 2014 elections," Alastair Newton, political analyst at the Japanese brokerage, said in a note dated November 26.
However, Newton tempered his political forecast saying "a stable government, regardless of whether it is led by the BJP or the Congress, should support a gradual business cycle recovery".
"Once political stability has been established, we believe past investment projects cleared by the Cabinet Committee of Investment could be implemented," Nomura India chief economist Sonal Verma said.
Verma said political stability and policy credibility are paramount to corporates making long-term investment decisions. This will help the economy witness a gradual recovery after the third quarter of 2014, she said. Verma also said a Third Front government or a fractured mandate in the hustings will further slow the reform momentum and lower potential growth.
Recently, Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs had raised its investment stance on India to 'marketweight'. Goldman had said that the recent market rally was driven by the 'Modi effect' and had raised Nifty target to 6900 for 2014-end.
The Goldman statement attracted scathing criticism from a number of senior Union ministers who asked them to stick to what they are good and keep off from meddling in the political matters of the country.
Christopher Wood of the Hong Kong-based brokerage CLSA too has repeatedly batted for Modi in his column 'Greed and Fear'.
"There is no doubt that what could be termed a Modi momentum is building in India... It is also clear that perceptions of Narendra Modi's prospects for the general election are rising by the day," Wood had written in his column recently.

New Delhi: Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal, accused of raping a younger colleague in Goa earlier his month is likely to be arrested by the Goa Police today. Reports say that Tejpal will be arrested as soon as he arrives before the Goa Police.
On Wednesday, the Goa Police summoned him to appear before it by 3 pm on Thursday in the probe into the sexual assault allegation against him. The police may issue a non-bailable warrant against Tejpal if he does not appear before the investigating officer or prolong the questioning till Delhi high court comes out with its order on his anticipatory bail plea on Friday, experts say.
On Thursday morning, Tehelka Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhury resigned from her post.
In her resignation letter on Tehelka's website, Chaudhury said she had "taken a series of actions in response to this (the junior journalist's) complaint".

She said: "To my mind, I acted on instant outrage and solidarity for our colleague as a woman and co-worker." She added: "I could have done many things differently and in a more measured way, I reject the allegations of a cover-up because in no way could the first actions that were taken be deemed suppression of any kind."
The National Commission for Women had asked her to explain in detail the measures she took to redress the sexual harassment complaint filed against Tejpal.

Chaudhury also said in her letter that "things have been misconstrued and have snowballed exponentially in the media, based on half-facts and selective leaks", referring to much publicised sexual assault case.

New Delhi: Managing Editor of Tehelka Shoma Chaudhury resigned today a week after its Editor Tarun Tejpal was exposed as having allegedly sexually assaulting a woman journalist colleague.
Chaudhury's resignation early this morning comes as Goa police appeared to be closing in on Tejpal who has to appear before it by 3 PM today and speculation that she may also be named in the FIR for certain acts of commission and omission after the alleged offence became public.
"Over the past week, I have been accused of an attempt to cover-up and for not standing by my feminist positions. While I accept that I could have done many things differently and in a more measured way, I reject the allegations of a cover-up because in no way could the first actions that were taken be deemed suppression of any kind.
"As for my feminist positions, I believe I acted in consonance with them by giving my colleague's account precedence over everything else," Chaudhury said in her resignation letter. "However, despite this, as a result of what's transpired over the past few days, my integrity has repeatedly been questioned by people from our fraternity and, in fact, by the public at large. I would like to take cognisance of this."
Tejpal, who failed to get any immediate relief on his anticipatory bail petition in the Delhi High Court, was yesterday summoned by the Goa police to appear before it in connection with the probe in the case.
DIG of Police O P Mishra refused to discuss their strategy if he does not turn up before the Investigating Officer. The police may issue a non-bailable warrant against Tejpal if he does not appear before the IO or prolong the questioning till Delhi High Court comes out with its order on his anticipatory bail plea on Friday, experts say.
The police move also came on a day the victim, a former journalist of Tehelka, who was allegedly sexually assaulted in a lift in a five-star hotel in Goa earlier this month, arrived here and recorded her statement under Section 164 of CrPC before a local court.
The statement of the victim under section 164 CrPC is being recorded in a local court here. The process is still on, said Mishra.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had yesterday dismissed Tejpal's accusations that the BJP government in the state was pursuing vendetta against him because of the sting operation conducted by his organisation that unseated party President Bangaru Laxman and other issues.

New York:  Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is among Time magazine's shortlisted candidates for its 'Person of the Year' title and has emerged as an early favourite among the readers in an online poll.
Time has shortlisted 42 global leaders, entrepreneurs and celebrities for its 'Person of the Year 2013' and will announce the winner next month. Other candidates in fray are Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, US President Barack Obama, Pakistani teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and even the new heir to the British throne Prince George.
On Modi, Time said "the controversial Hindu nationalist and Chief Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat is the most likely candidate to unseat India's ruling Congress party in the world's largest democracy."
Modi is the only Indian in the shortlist. While Time's editors will choose the winner, it has asked readers to cast their votes for the person they think "most influenced the news this year for better or worse". So far Modi has got over 2650 votes and with about 25 per cent, is leading the online readers' poll. Mr Modi is way ahead with Snowden, who garnered the second highest number of votes at about 7 per cent as on November 20.
Obama, who has twice been named 'Person of the Year', is in the shortlist with the US magazine saying the President's "second term started with a slew of self-inflicted wounds and unfulfilled promise(s), from an IRS scandal and stalled immigration reform to the bungled Obamacare launch".
Syrian President Bashar Assad is also among the contenders.
Among the other candidates are New Jersey governor Chris Christie, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Pope Francis, Oscar winner Angelina Jolie. International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Germany's re-elected Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin are other contenders.
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Chinese President Xi Jinping are also among those shortlisted. Chechen brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the suspects in the Boston Marathon terror bombings, are in the shortlist too.

Ghaziabad: Lodged in separate cells amid high security, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were "inconsolable" and refused to have dinner, according to officials at Dasna prison, where the couple were brought after being convicted for the murder of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj.

After the CBI court pronounced its verdict, the dentist couple were taken into custody and taken to Dasna Jail in a blue police gypsy, escorted by two other vehicles. They reached the jail at around 4 pm, and looked visibly distressed as they got down from the police vehicle.

"As the quantum of punishment is yet to be delivered, they have been kept in separate cells with high security. Women police personnel have been deputed for Nupur Talwar," said a senior jail official, who didn't wish to be named. According to jail officials, since they have reached the jail, both Rajesh and Nupur Talwar "have been crying and didn't take dinner".

"We tried to talk to them, but Rajesh and Nupur continued crying and were inconsolable," said the official.

David Headly not only confused US intelligence but betrayed his three wives, his best friend Rana and even the ISI maintained a distance from him to the point of flatly refusing to meet him face to face

New Delhi: Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative David Coleman Headley, who scouted targets for the 26/11 terror attack, was "never anyone's client" and his modus operandi was only to "save himself by sacrificing others", say Adrian Levy and Cathy Scott-Clark, authors of "The Siege".
Headley "betrayed Lashkar (e-Taiba). He befuddled US intelligence. He betrayed his three wives. He betrayed (Tahawwur) Rana, his best friend. Lashkar even suspected this and reported that he was a spy to their ISI link. ISI too backed away from him, refusing to meet face to face," the authors told IANS in an email interview.
Headley, a Pakistani American from Chicago, had visited India several times ahead of the 26/11 attack to recce the city and choose sites, including the Taj Mahal hotel and Chabad House, for the attack.
Ten Pakistani terrorists laid siege to key Indian institutions in the country's commercial capital for three days from November 26, 2008, killing 166 people, including foreigners.
"Headley is complex and knowing. A hybrid, convincing in Pakistan and in the Upper West Side of New York, where he ran his video store, he was also, according to his own mother, an adventuress from Maryland, someone whose selfishness was derived from his lack of sense of self," the authors told IANS.
"He was sent to Pakistan to be with his father who placed him in a military school and yet he pined for his mother, feeling rejected by her, and soon joining her in the US."
"His modus operandi was to save himself by sacrificing others. When he began buying drugs in Pakistan in the early 1980s, he did so by manipulating his best friend Rana, a schoolmate who was then a medic in the Pakistan army.
"Headley (then called Daood Saleem Gilani) abused Rana's military credentials and truck, to get into the tribal territories on drug buying missions, stashing his illicit cache in the military vehicle without Rana knowing."
"When he was busted in 1984, he gave up the syndicate around him. He did the same in 1988 and 1994, in New York. Each time he made a deal with the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) and finally with the US intelligence community.
"In 1998 when he was arrested for importing heroin, US embassies in Africa had been devastated by Al Qaeda, announcing its arrival on the global terrorist stage. Headley/Gilani offered to penetrate Islamist movements in Pakistan - an irresistible offer back then."
"He would not get into Lashkar until 2006, and then slowly edged also towards Al Qaeda, and in particular Ilyas Kashmiri's 313 Brigade in Waziristan. This was known by the US that was monitoring his email and phones. They knew then that a US passport holder was closer than anyone else to Osama bin Laden at a time when capturing him was a prime objective," they said.
"But Headley was never anyone's client." He betrayed the LeT, his wives, his friend and co-conspirator Rana, and confused the US intelligence and the ISI, the authors said.
Headley entered into a plea bargain with the US authorities, under which he could not be extradited to a foreign nation. A team of India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) went to interrogate Headley in his Chicago jail in 2010.
He was sentenced to 35 years in prison by the US courts in January 2013.

Panaji: The Tehelka journalist, who had accused its editor Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting her, has shown willingness to travel to Goa and record her statement before the authorities, a senior police official said today.
The woman, who was contacted by Investigating Officer Sunita Sawant over phone yesterday, has shown willingness to co-operate, a senior official said on condition of anonymity.
"If the woman travels to Goa, her statement would be recorded before the magistrate under IPC section 164 (recording of confessions and statements)," the official said. Although Goa police are yet to meet the woman, who lives in Mumbai, the official said the first conversation between the investigating officer and her was very fruitful.
"She has narrated many things which are not mentioned even in the email. That could go against Tarun Tejpal," a police official said. The woman is ready to fully co-operate with the investigating agency, the official said.
Goa Deputy Inspector General of Police O P Mishra had told reporters in Panaji yesterday that the investigating officer in the case had contacted the woman but refused to divulge details, claiming police wanted to protect her privacy.
The woman told the investigating officer that she had delayed in filing a case against Tejpal as "he was a high profile person." The woman had also resigned from the magazine to be "free from any kind of pressure."
Goa police will be contacting her again today, seeking her statement before the magistrate. "The details like when she will come can be known only after that," the official said.
Meanwhile, a senior police official rubbished reports that a lookout circular had been issued against Tejpal. "How can we issue lookout circular against him when we have not even summoned him in the case?" he said.
The police are proceeding systematically in the matter and would go ahead only after properly recording the statement of the woman which is very crucial before examining Tejpal, he said.
Goa police had on November 22 lodged an FIR against Tejpal under IPC sections 376 (rape), 376 (2)(k) (rape by a person of a woman in his custody taking advantage of his official position) and 354 (outraging modesty) in connection with the incident.

Total foreign investment in the stock market has reached Rs 96,461 crore so far in 2013

New Delhi: Overseas investors poured in over Rs 7,500 crore ($1.2 billion) in the equity market since the beginning of the month amid renewed optimism about the Indian economy. Total foreign investment in the stock market has reached Rs 96,461 crore ($17.4 billion) so far in 2013, according to data from the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the capital market regulator. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 39,572 crore and sold Rs 32,045 crore of shares during November 1-22 — a net inflow of Rs 7,527 crore.
On November 22, FIIs were net sellers of equity for the first time since October 3 and sold Rs 40 crore of shares on renewed uncertainty about the US Federal Reserve tapering its stimulus programme.  They invested a net Rs 28,700 crore in stocks during the past two months (September-October). Overseas investors pulled out Rs 4,569 crore from debt securities so far this month. They have withdrawn a net Rs 54,723 crore from the debt market since the beginning of 2013.
FII inflows into the stock markets have been buoyant since September 2013 on the back of continued global liquidity. Finance minister P Chidambaram had said earlier this month that the current account deficit has been under control, the fiscal deficit target will be met, export growth is expected to continue and a bumper harvest is likely after the good monsoon.  Industrial production and trade data released earlier this month gave an impetus to foreign investors.
Industrial output rose 2 per cent in September from a dismal 0.43 per cent in August. India's exports rose 13.47 per cent to $27.27 billion in October while imports dipped 14.5 per cent, helping to narrow the trade deficit. The benchmark 30-stock S&P BSE sensex closed at a record 21,239.36 on November 3. Since the end of October, the index has declined 947 points, or 4.47 per cent, to 20,217.39 points on Friday. As of November 22, the number of registered FIIs in the country stood at 1,743 and the total number of sub-accounts at 6,406.

New Delhi: Salt-to-software conglomerate Tata group's combined turnover has slipped below USD 100-billion mark due to a fall in rupee, despite an over ten per cent growth in total revenue when measured in Indian currency.
Tatas have, however, emerged as the country's first business house to record an annual turnover of more than Rs five lakh crore in rupee terms, while its headcount rose by nearly 88,000 persons to over 5.4 lakh employees in 2012-13.
The group, with over 100 operating companies, saw its total revenue rise by 10.8 per cent to Rs 5,27,047 crore in last fiscal, from Rs 4,75,721 crore in previous year.
However, a fall of over 14 per cent in rupee value against the US dollar during the fiscal 2012-13 resulted into Tata group recording a fall of over three per cent in its USD dollar revenue during the year.
In US dollar terms, Tatas' total revenue stood at USD 96.79 billion in 2012-13, down 3.3 per cent from USD 100.09 billion in the previous year, according to latest financial information published by the group.
Last year, Tatas had become the country's first and only business house to cross the turnover of USD 100 billion.
The group has used an exchange rate of Rs 54.45 for one US dollar for 2012-13, and that of Rs 47.53 for previous year. The revenue figures for group companies are consolidated and net of excise duty, wherever applicable.
While the group has not disclosed its total profits for the latest fiscal (2012-13) so far, its profit after tax had slipped by 9.4 per cent to USD 5.23 billion in 2011-12.
The revenue in the fiscal 2011-12 had risen by about 20 per cent from USD 83.3 billion in the year 2010-11. In rupee terms, the revenue growth was higher at 25.3 per cent in 2011-12 and fall in profit was lower at 4.5 per cent.
The group's international revenue continues to account for more than half of total worldwide turnover and rose by 2.7 per cent to USD 60.7 billion in 2012-13. Besides, its net forex earnings almost doubled to USD 3.05 billion in 2012-13, from USD 1.59 billion in the preceding fiscal.
Its total assets, however, fell marginally by 1.3 per cent to USD 107.17 billion in 2012-13. The group currently commands combined market capitalisation of close to USD 100 billion with 32 listed companies.
The international operations and overseas acquisitions have played a significant role in the group's revenue growth in recent years. The group turnover had crossed Rs one lakh crore mark in 2006-07, while it stood at little below Rs 50,000 crore level in 2001-02.
The group is present in more than 80 nations and markets across Asia, Africa, America, Europe and Australia. Tatas have made a number of high-profile takeovers abroad, including high-profile acquisitions like Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008 and Corus Steel in 2007, and made an offer last week to acquire US-listed Orient Express, which runs an iconic chain of hotels and luxury trains.

Sebi has frozen many bank accounts; the market regulator has powers to crackdown on illegal investment schemes

Mumbai: Markets regulator Sebi said it has ordered recovery of over Rs 500 crore from defaulting/ erring companies ever since the new search and seizure order was implemented two months ago. "In the past two months that the search and seizure order has been in place, we have passed orders to recover more than Rs 500 crore.
"We have frozen a whole number of bank accounts. Though I don't have the exact number of bank accounts frozen, a number of accounts and assets have been frozen worth over Rs 500 crore," Sebi chairman UK Sinha told a capital markets summit organised by the Hyderabad-based Indian School of Business here.
It can be recalled that in a major upgrade of powers given to Sebi, the government had on July 22 this year allowed the regulator to pass orders like search & seizure, attachment of properties, arrest and detention of defaulters and pass disgorgement directions to recover the wrongful gains made in contravention of laws. At the same time, the government had also allowed Sebi to seek information from other regulators within the country and abroad with retrospective effect, paving way to collect details pertaining to cases pending for over 15 years now.
In another retrospective change, which forms part of the Securities Laws Amendment Ordinance promulgated early July, individuals and companies being probed by Sebi could settle their pending investigations. Such settlements could be undertaken in cases that are currently pending for more than six years. To tackle the growing menace of ponzi schemes being floated as collective investment schemes, the rules were also amended to classify any money collection of Rs 100 crore or more as CIS operation.
Sebi had also been given powers to crack down on illegal investment schemes floated by individuals as well, as against this being confined only to companies. However, all government-notified schemes would be out of the collective investment scheme framework. The changes were part of as many as 22 amendments made by the government in three main Acts governing Sebi and its operations-the Sebi Act, the Securities Contracts Regulation Act and the Depositories Act- through a 16-page Ordinance. Among others, Sebi had also been given powers to pass disgorgement orders for amount equivalent to wrongful gains or to losses averted by contravention of regulations.

New Delhi: The Goa police today recorded statements of three witnesses with whom the Tehelka woman journalist had reportedly spoken to after the alleged sexual assault on her by the magazine editor Tarun Tejpal. These are three colleagues of the victim with whom she had interacted soon after the alleged assault happened at a Goa hotel around a fortnight ago. She had also reportedly sent them e-mailed copies of her complaint to Tehelka Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhary. The statements were recorded at at Goa Sadan here, sources said.
The woman journalist had also reportedly mentioned the name of her three colleagues in the complaint and said Chaudhary could corroborate facts about the incident from them. The sources said police are likely to question Tejpal later in the day. Meanwhile, Tejpal's lawyer said the Goa police are yet to contact his or his client. Tejpal's arrest is not being ruled out. Chaudhary was yesterday questioned for more than eight hours by the Goa police's special investigation team.
The sources said that a three-member team of Goa police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares, which arrived yesterday here, had to the magazine's office in posh South Delhi locality of Greater Kailash Part II and questioned Chaudhary and a couple of other employees of Tehelka. Later, the team, which also includes Sunita Sawant who is the Investigating Officer in the case, also recorded the statements of Chaudhary and the other Tehelka employees questioned, they said.
The Tehelka magazine in a Twitter post had said Chaudhury shared all documents requested by the Goa police and that she would continue to assist with the investigation. Sources said the Goa police questioned Chaudhary about when the issue first came to her knowledge and about the sequence of events. The police took into custody the e-mail trail between Chaudhary, the woman journalist and Tejpal.
Other than that, Chaudhary's mobile phone, the tablet phone and laptop were also screened by the police, according to the sources.
As the questioning went on, the alleged victim issued a statement last night suggesting she and her family were being subjected to pressure and intimidation at an "intensely traumatic" time to "protect" Tejpal. According to a statement, a member of Tejpal's immediate family came to her mother's house here and asked her (mother) to "protect Mr.Tejpal and demanded to know (1) who I was seeking legal help from and (2) what I wanted as the result of my complaint of sexual molestation by Mr.Tejpal". The Goa police team also requested the woman journalist to join the probe and formally file a complaint.

New Delhi: The state unit of the BJP Sunday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging that Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal is enrolled as a voter in three places - two in Delhi and one in Uttar Pradesh.
The letter dated Nov 22 said Kejriwal has voter identity cards issued from Sahibabad constituency in Uttar Pradesh, and Seemapuri and New Delhi constituencies in the national capital.
The Sahibabad and Seemapuri cards bear the same identification numbers.
"We have obtained the information from the official websites of the chief electoral officers of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi," said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Satish Upadhyay.
Upadhyay and fellow party member Harish Khurana had written the letter.
"Kejriwal has violated the election laws and he is liable to be penalised if the available facts on the website are correct," he added.
"It is requested that immediate inquiry is conducted and penal action initiated against Kejriwal."

Hyderabad: For State Bank of India’s 14-crore debit card holders, apart from ATMs, a new channel for withdrawing cash has opened up.
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, SBI is allowing cash withdrawal of up to Rs 1,000 from any shop/trader with a point-of-sale (PoS) terminal.
“A fee of Rs 7.50 will be charged to the customer, a part of which goes to the trader. Actually, it is a win-win situation for all,” Sadanand, a senior SBI official looking after ATMs and alternative channels told Business Line.
From a customer’s point of view, this will be yet another value-add on debit card as most business establishments, including some grocery stores, operate PoS machines.
From a trader’s point of view, it brings additional revenue of about Rs 5 per transaction.
“There are more benefits. As most traders have higher cash-flows, they showed preference to dispense some cash back into the system, reducing the need to deposit it back in banks,’’ the SBI official said.
From a bank’s perspective, this will reduce pressure on ATMs as people withdrawing smaller amounts might now prefer to do it from a next door grocery rather than going to ATM.
This would mean that frequency of replenishing ATMs with cash might come down for banks.
The idea of opening up PoS terminals for cash withdrawal was floated by the Reserve Bank of India a couple of years ago.
But it is gaining acceptance only now, with the increasing use of alternative channels by bank customers.
POS TERMINALS
While ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank are the leading providers of PoS terminals among private sector banks, SBI, with about one lakh terminals, is the leader among public sector banks as on June-end this year. The entire banking system has 10.5 lakh terminals and the number is growing fast.
It is in this context that the new facility to withdraw cash is appealing.
“In these days of plastic money, sudden requirement for liquid cash is sometimes inevitable.
“The facility is nice because while buying something on debit card, you can also withdraw petty cash,” M. Amala, a customer at Shoppers Stop here reacted when asked about the new facility.

Bangalore: Cracking the whip, police shut down about 1,050 ATMs across the city since late Sunday for not posting round-the-clock security guards and installing CCTV camera outside and burglar alarms in their kiosks, an officer said Monday.
"After the three-day deadline to comply with the security directive ended 4 p.m. Sunday, police stations across the city were ordered to shut down all unguarded ATMs in their jurisdiction, a city Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told IANS Monday.
"Banks will be allowed to re-open the shut ATMs after complying with the mandatory order, as safety and security of customers in such kiosks is primarily their responsibility," Auradkar reiterated.
In a recent survey done after a spate of ATM-related crimes were reported, police found of the 2,580 such kiosks across the city, about 600 were without security guards and many of them did not have CCTV camera outside and none burglar alarm.
"We told all state-run and private banks in three meetings we had with them in the recent past to enhance security in all ATM kiosks located either in branches or separately across the city to prevent attacks on them by miscreants," Auradkar recalled.
The bloody attack on state-run Corporation Bank branch manager Jyothi Uday, 44, by the suspect, who is still at-large, shocked this tech hub of 10-million denizens, with growing clamour for stringent security in and around ATM kiosks.
Latest investigations, however, revealed that a youth resembling the suspect was seen in the footage of a CCTV camera in an ATM kiosk Nov 12 at Kadiri in Anantapur district of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, around 175km from here.
In the footage, shared by the Andhra police with the state police, the suspect is seen in an SBI ATM kiosk standing behind two persons to draw cash using a stolen debit card, in the same dress in which he attacked Jyothi a week later (Nov 19).
The suspect in both footages is seen wearing a blue striped shirt and cream pant with an identical shoulder bag that he was caught attacking Jyothi with a machete.
The State Bank of India (SBI) ATM kiosk is located at a crowded bus stand at Kadiri.
When the Andhra police found the suspect to be same as the person caught attacking Jyothi, they scanned CCTV footage of all ATMs in the district and traced him drawing money even Nov 10-11 from an ATM at Dharmavaram, 185km from Bangalore.

Hyderabad: Helen, the cyclonic storm in Bay of Bengal, is heading to hit Andhra Pradesh coast later in the day while several parts of the region started receiving heavy rains under its impact. An alert has been sounded in the coastal districts, while authorities are taking precautionary measures including evacuation of people from low-lying area to minimize the damage from the cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe cyclonic storm will cross the coast near Machillipatnam around Friday afternoon.
IMD has issued cyclone warning to Andhra Pradesh coast. The IMD's bulletin early on Friday said 'Helen' over west central Bay of Bengal moved slightly west-northwestwards and lay centred at about 120 km east of Machillipatnam, 250 km east-northeast of Ongole and 200 km south-southwest of Vishakhapatnam. It would move west-northwestwards for some time, then westward and cross Andhra Pradesh coast near Machillipatnam.
Heavy rains accompanied by strong gales are lashing Krishna, Visakhapatnam, West Godavari and some other parts of the coastal region since early Friday. Authorities have declared holiday for educational institutions. Under the influence of cyclone, rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places would occur over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari districts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 48 hours. Isolated extremely heavy falls (25cm or more) are also likely.
Rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls would occur over remaining districts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh Rayalseema and Telangana on Friday and Saturday. Squally winds speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph would prevail along and off south Andhra coast. The wind speed would gradually increase up to gale wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph at the time of landfall. The IMD has warned that storm surge of about 1 to 1.5m height would inundate the low lying areas of west and east Godavari Krishna, Guntur and adjoining areas of Prakasham district at the time of landfall.
Sea condition will be rough to very rough along and off south Andhra coast. Extensive damage to thatched roofs and huts and minor damage to power and communication lines was expected due to uprooting of trees. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The authorities have hoisted warning signals at all ports along Andhra coast. Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who reviewed the situation in coastal districts with top officials at a meeting in Hyderabad on Thursday, directed the chief secretary to closely monitor the situation with all collectors of coastal districts to face any eventuality. A control room to monitor the situation has been opened at the state secretariat in Hyderabad. The control room numbers are 040-23456005, 23451043.
Krishna district collector Raghunandan Rao said a holiday was declared for all educational institution in coastal areas.  He said 10 relief camps were opened for people evacuated from low-lying areas. Sixty personnel of National Disaster Response Force ( NDRF) personnel were deployed for rescue and relief operations. A control room in Krishna district collector's office was opened. Its telephone numbers are 08672-252572 08672-251077
Helen is threatening Andhra coast even as the state is yet to recover from the massive damages caused by 'Phailin' and heavy rains in October. Andhra Pradesh has nearly 1,000 km long coastline and the nine district faces cyclone threats every year, especially between September and November.

New Delhi:The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was jolted by a sting operation that showed some of its candidates including Shazia Ilmi accepting funds without proper verification, just days before the Dec 4 assembly elections in Delhi. The sting carried out by "media sarkar" shows Ilmi, the AAP candidate from south Delhi's R.K. Puram, willing to accept donations in cash without receipt and offering to "adjust" the amount as "salary for party volunteers".

Taking note of the video, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said the guilty would not be spared and that there will be "no compromise against corruption". "Some sting operations done on our candidates. Our team is looking into it. We will not spare if anyone is guilty," Kejriwal tweeted. "We will walk the talk. There would be absolutely no compromise against corruption," he added. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took potshots at AAP and said the party's greed has been exposed. "Exposure of AAP party... avarice is the root of all evils," tweeted BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The video comes as a setback for AAP which is already embroiled in a controversy over allegations of illegal foreign funding and a tussle with Anna Hazare over funds collected during the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement. Kejriwal and Hazare had together, under the IAC banner, held agitations against corruption in Delhi two years ago. The AAP has made the Delhi elections a three-way affair for the first time as until now the contest was always been between the Congress and the BJP.
Shazia Ilmi offers to withdraw her candidature
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party leader Shazia Ilmi has offered to withdraw her candidature from  Delhi assembly elections after a media portal claimed to have done a sting operation on her and the party's other senior leaders and alleged they were involved in "raising funds through illegal means." "It is an extremely important fight for AAP. But because of the underhand shoddy sting operation, I will not allow my party's image to be sullied. I offer to withdraw my candidature and not contest elections until and unless my name is cleared", Ilmi said.

The video purportedly showed a reporter meeting Ilmi posing as a representative of a company and sought her help to teach a lesson to a rival company. Initially, Ilmi refused to help the reporter without legal documents but later allegedly agreed to help her even without documents when the reporter offered her donations in cash. Ilmi is also shown in the video allegedly telling the reporter that the party accepts donations in cash. The sting operations were also done on AAP leader Kumar Vishwas and candidates from Kondli (Manoj Kumar), Sangam Vihar (Dinesh Mohaniya), Okhla (Irfan Ullah Khan), Rohtas Nagar (Mukesh Hooda), Deoli (Prakash) and Palam (Bhawna Gaur).

Reacting to allegations of funds misuse by AAP, BJP leader V K Malhotra said the sting operation has "exposed AAP totally". "Earlier also Anna Hazare condemned them for taking all this money which was collected at Hazare's agitation for election purpose. "Elections are in Delhi but money is coming from USA, UK and other places. If they take money from outside and contest election in Delhi, then tomorrow they can sell India's interest also by taking foreign money," said Malhotra.

Ilmi is a candidate of AAP from RK Puram assembly constituency. After the sting operation, AAP convened an emergency meeting of its political affairs committee which decided to take action against the candidates within 24 hours after going through the CD of the sting operation. "We will decide in 24 hours on the issue after going through content of the CD," Aam Admi Party leader Yogendra Yadav said after the meeting.

“If I don't have a woman for three days, I get terrible headaches”. This may not seem a particularly presidential thing to say, but these were words once uttered by former US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy to then-British Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
JFK had a reputation as something of a womaniser. For some, he simply loved women, for others he was a randy devil.
Despite his beautiful love story with Jackie Kennedy, he cheated on her repeatedly.
On the 50th anniversary of his assassination, we look at some of the most famous mistresses - alleged or otherwise - of the former President.

Bangalore: The Bangalore Police has set November 24 as the deadline for all banks to provide full security at their ATM kiosks across the city in wake of a brutal attack on a woman in an unguarded ATM on Tuesday. "We have set November 24, 4 pm as deadline for all state-run and private banks to deploy 24-hour security guards at their ATMs in the city, with functioning closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras inside and outside kiosks and a burglary alarm," city Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told reporters.

Asserting that the deadline was mandatory, Auradkar said no transaction would be allowed after Monday 4 pm from any ATM if the directive was not complied with any bank. "If any ATM is found without the arrangements stipulated in the order under the police act, its kiosk will be shut and transactions stopped forthwith," Mr Auradkar said. He said many banks have been setting up or opening ATM kiosks in private buildings or commercial complexes across the city, and had failed to inform police about the location of their ATMs with fool-proof security for the machine and customers.

"Our police force has noticed many ATMs mushrooming even in new residential layouts and city's outskirts without enough security system in place. We brought this to the notice of the top officials of all banks and prevailed on them to enhance security at their ATMs after a series of crimes involving ATMs occurred over a year," the Commissioner recalled. In a related development, police announced Rs.1 lakh reward for information on the assailant who is still at large after assaulting the victim, a woman bank officer, in the ATM. "We will reward Rs.1 lakh to any person sharing information on the assailant absconding after assaulting bank manager Jyothi Uday in her bank's ATM kiosk in the city centre," Auradkar said earlier in the day.

The informer's identity will be protected to ensure his/her safety. Unconfirmed reports earlier in the day said the assailant had sold the victim's mobile handset to a cell recharge shop at Hindupur in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh, about 100 km north of Bangalore. "We learnt from our counterparts in the neighbouring state that the mobile recharge shop owner bought the handset from a person whose identity he did not know. The buyer is being interrogated to ascertain the whereabouts of the attacker," Auradkar said.

One of the eight special teams, set up to investigate the horrifying incident, is also on the lookout for another person who may have remained outside the state-run Corporation Bank ATM while the assailant was inside the kiosk attacking the victim. "We are trying to find out if the unknown assailant had an accomplice standing outside the kiosk to ensure nobody entered it to draw cash from the ATM. As the machine was out of order for over a week, customers stopped entering it though it was repaired but no guard was present in the early hours (around 7am) of that day," a police official told IANS.

Meanwhile, 44-year-old Jyothi is recovering at a private hospital from the severe injuries she suffered on her head, face and nose when the assailant attacked her with a machete.

15-year-old Mumbai teenager Prithvi Shaw created a national record today, hitting an astonishing 546 playing for Rizvi Springfield against St Francis D'Assisi Borivali in an inter-school match for the prestigious Harris Shield here today.
Touted as one of the bright young prospects emerging out of Mumbai school of batsmanship, the state U-16 captain Prithvi hit 85 boundaries and five sixes in the match played at the Azad Maidan.
In the process, Shaw became the first schoolboy cricketer to hit a 500 plus score in an official inter-school match.
Prithvi eclipsed his senior schoolmate and former India opener Wasim Jaffer's nephew Arman's score of 498, which he scored a few years back.
Having bowled out St Francis for 92, Shaw was unbeaten on 257 off 166 balls yesterday and smashed another 289 runs on the day.
It was Harris Shield, which first brought Sachin Tendulkar into national prominence after his world record partnership of 664 with Vinod Kambli that was broken a few years back.
The previous highest by an Indian in any form of registered competitive cricket is 515 by Dadabhoy Havewala for BB and CI Railway vs St. Xavier's College at Mumbai during 1933-34 season.
This is the third highest score if one goes by all the registered scorecards available worldwide since the inception of competitive cricket. As per available information, AEJ Collins scored 628 not out in a competitive match in England in 1899 and CJ Eady struck 566 in another competitive match in 1901.

JPMorgan agrees $13 billion settlement with US over bad mortgages

JPMorgan agrees $13 billion settlement with US over bad mortgages

The Department of Justice trumpeted its settlement as a big step toward holding banks accountable for their behavior before the financial crisis

New York/Washington: In late September, JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon walked into the office of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
"We're willing to take our lumps," he said, according to a person briefed on the matter. "We don't think there were serious mistakes made," he added, in a meeting he had requested with Holder.
JPMorgan finally took its punishment on Tuesday, agreeing to a $13 billion settlement with the U.S. government to settle charges that the bank overstated the quality of mortgages it was selling to investors in the run-up to the financial crisis.
The behavior that the largest U.S. bank admitted to, authorities said, is at the heart of what inflated the housing bubble: lenders making bad mortgages and selling them to investors who thought they were relatively safe. When the loans started turning bad, investors lost faith in the banking system, and a housing crisis turned into a financial crisis.
The Justice Department said in its statement that JPMorgan acknowledged it had regularly and knowingly sold mortgages to investors that should have never been sold.
But JPMorgan's Chief Financial Officer, speaking on a conference call, said the bank had not admitted to violating any laws. CFO Marianne Lake added that the facts the bank admitted to did not leave it vulnerable in other litigation.
In other words, the bank and the government did not agree about what they had agreed to in the settlement, capping weeks of squabbling over the terms of the deal.
At issue in Tuesday's settlement was the long chain of companies between lenders giving mortgages to consumers during the mortgage bubble and the investors that ultimately forked over the money to fund the loans. Often smaller lenders would make subprime mortgage loans, and sell them to a bank, which would package loans into bonds, and in turn sell them to investors.
With so many middlemen, investors had poor information about what they were buying, and capital flowed to loans that arguably should never have been made.
When the air hissed out of the U.S. mortgage market, investors said they were gulled, and that the mortgages they bought were not good enough in the first place to have been sold. Banks for their part have said that mortgages failed not because they failed to meet investors' stated standards, but because the housing market as a whole headed south.
JPMorgan said it has set aside the funds it needs to cover the settlement, meaning the deal will have no impact on its future earnings. The deal resolves most of its mortgage issues with federal authorities, the bank said. JPMorgan's shares rose 0.7 percent to close at $56.15 on Tuesday.
The civil settlement marks the end of weeks of tense negotiations between JPMorgan Chase, which is looking to move past the legal issues that have plagued it for more than a year, and the U.S. government, which is under pressure to hold banks accountable for behavior that led to the financial crisis.
But even after the settlement, the bank faces at least nine other government probes, covering everything from its hiring practices in China to whether it manipulated the Libor benchmark interest rate. It may still also face criminal charges linked to mortgage matters. Dimon avoided the worst pitfalls of the financial crisis, but now is discovering he did not avoid all of them.
BREAKING IT DOWN
The government called the settlement the largest in U.S. history, but the deal is really several rolled into one. It includes a $4 billion consumer relief package, and a $4 billion settlement with the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees government mortgage financing companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Of the $4 billion consumer relief package, at least $1.5 billion will go toward loans the bank is forgiving. As much as $500 million will go to change the terms of loans to lower monthly payments.
The remaining $2 billion will be for assorted purposes, including new loans for low- and moderate-income borrowers in areas that have been hard-hit by the housing crisis and for demolition of abandoned homes.
Of the $13 billion settlement, $4 billion is for the consumer relief package, $4 billion is for the FHFA deal, and $5 billion is for a civil penalty to the Justice Department and claims from other state and federal government entities.
After taxes, the settlement should cost JPMorgan about $9 billion, because about $11 billion of the settlement is tax deductible, said Gregg Polsky, a law professor at the University of North Carolina. The bank said last month it had set aside $23 billion to cover litigation expenses.
MORE COMING
JPMorgan admitted that it told investors the loans it was selling them met particular standards.
Outside firms that reviewed some of the loans for JPMorgan in 2006 and 2007 told bank employees that 27 percent of the mortgages did not meet underwriting guidelines. One employee expressed concerns about loans to another employee, the bank said in its statement of facts.
The bank and the Justice Department differed regarding how to interpret the statement of facts that the parties had agreed to.
A person involved in the JPMorgan negotiations said that the pattern of bad mortgages being packaged and sold to investors was spread throughout the banking industry. He noted that the bad deals in question were created not only by JPMorgan, but also by two failed banks it took over during the financial crisis, namely Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual.
"Right now, the banks all are holding their breath," said James D. Cox, a law professor at Duke University who specializes in corporate and securities law. "They understand it means a big number for them as well."
On a call with analysts, when asked why the Department of Justice acted first on JPMorgan, Dimon said: "You've got to ask them ... It could have been somebody else. There was going to be a first."
JPMorgan and government agencies reached a tentative agreement in mid-October and have been hammering out details since then. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman was also involved in discussions.
JPMorgan's negotiations with the Justice Department began in earnest last spring, after Justice Department lawyers in California preliminarily concluded that the bank had violated U.S. civil laws. The Justice Department had looked into mortgage bonds the bank sold from 2005 through 2007, the company said in August.
The talks went sour, and government lawyers prepared to file a lawsuit against JPMorgan in September and scheduled a news conference to announce it. But they canceled it at the last minute as JPMorgan reached out to government officials to discuss a settlement. That effort to restart talks resulted in JPMorgan's Dimon meeting U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
Negotiations were difficult, people involved in the matter said. Parties joined the talks, then dropped out. In recent weeks, they stopped, only to restart. Details of the deal were being worked out hours before it was announced on Tuesday, said two people involved.
The bank's general counsel, Stephen Cutler, and Associate Attorney General Tony West were critical in negotiating the deal, sources said. Cutler was previously director of enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The settlement is the most significant action to come out of a task force the Obama administration created in January 2012, years after the height of the financial crisis, to probe the packaging and sale of shoddy home loans.
Lawmakers and others have been critical of the administration's failure to hold Wall Street banks, executives, and other parties accountable for the excesses that resulted in the housing crisis.
The task force included representatives from the Justice Department, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and the New York State Attorney General, among others.
JPMorgan's settlement was with the Department of Justice, several state Attorneys General, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, the National Credit Union Administration, and the FHFA.
